Fremont, CA: Over seventy photographs by master Bay Area photographer/designer Marvin Wax will be presented in a retrospective at the historic Olive Hyde Art Gallery in Fremont. Wax, a resident of Palo Alto, is familiar to many as an architectural photographer and for his work in the best-selling book “Eichler Homes” (Chronicle Books, 1995). Over the years, fine art photography has become his consuming passion, and led to the prints comprising the core of this exhibit.
Wax obtained his degree in graphic design from Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. He spent much of his early professional career with advertising firms working for corporate pharmaceutical clients. After moving to the Bay Area his work attracted the attention of architects and building contractors, and led to a long career in the field, including several years as Assistant Professor in graphic design at San Jose State University.
The ease with which photography enabled him to express his ideas on design led to his adopting the camera as his main creative tool and to his attraction to subjects of broad thematic content. Central to his choice and treatment of subjects is his ability to envision a strong sense of design and beauty in the final image. This is well evidenced in the diversity of images on exhibit, covering the California desert, trees and cacti on the Stanford campus, sea shells, graffiti in a Palo Alto skateboard park, and people and places encountered during his travels to countries such as Costa Rica, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Israel, Siberia and Bali. His success in capturing the beauty in ordinary people is in no small measure attributable to his ability to put them at ease by his personal warmth, compassion and sensitivity.
These prints of exceptional range and beauty can be seen from September 1st to October 7th at the Olive Hyde Art Gallery. A reception with the artist will be held on Friday September 1st from 7 to 9 pm, and is open to the public.
The Olive Hyde Art Gallery is at 123 Washington Blvd in Fremont and is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 5 pm. For more information, call the gallery at 510.791.4357 or visit on the web at http://www.ci.fremont.ca.us/Recreation/OliveHydeArtGallery/default.htm
